Learning Communities
What exactly is a Learning Community (LC)? Here's how to pick yours.
Maybe you’ve already heard about the Learning Communities (LCs) at PLU, and maybe you haven’t, but the thing you need to know is that every student, whether you live on campus or commute, is part of a Learning Community, and you get to pick which you want to be a part of.
LCs are a way for you to connect with community inside and outside of the classroom. You’ll get to take a First Year Experience course linked to your LC, and will have opportunities to participate in activities related to the theme(s) and communities that most interest you.
Below we’ve got answers to questions you might have, and how to select your Learning Community!
What are the LC options? (click on the links to get more details about each)
- Community for Creative Expression
- Contemporary Issues
- Diversity, Justice, & Sustainability Community
- Hong International Community (Global Engagement & Language Immersion)
- Lavender Community (LGBTQ+ identified and allies)
- Self & Society
- STEM House
- Wellness House
- Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equity Community
How do I pick my LC?
Research the LCs to see which interest you the most (you can apply for more than one and rank your choices), then complete the Learning Community application. If you’re living on campus, this is also the application for your housing and your roommate questionnaire. If you’re commuting, this is also part 1 of the required Confirmation of Living at Home (COLAH) process. (p.s. – you have to use your PLU email for this application, and then check your email later for confirmation!)
*Please note: if you’ve already been assigned to housing and chosen a Learning Community, you do NOT need to fill out the application. If you’re in Tingelstad (but not in the Wellness or STEM house), Pflueger, or Harstad (but did not opt in to the Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equity Community), you need complete this short form to choose between the Contemporary Issues or Society & Self LCs.
Why do I need to pick my LC for registration?
Because we need it to be able to register you for your linked First Year Experience (FYEP) Writing 101 class. If you don’t choose your LC, we’ll have to choose for you…and that’s less fun for everyone.
What if I haven’t decided yet if I’ll be living on campus or commuting?
If you’re still unsure, we recommend you go ahead and apply for housing – you can always change later if needed! Email rlif@plu.edu if something comes up or if you have questions.
