We caught up with Hillary Powell, our Director of Undergraduate Admission, to get the inside scoop on how to make your Common App stand out now that applications are open for PLU’s Class of 2025! If you’re ready to apply to PLU, these 10 tips from our Admission team will help you feel confident and ready to put your best foot forward this application season.

Start Early, Stress Less: Procrastination? Not today! Get a head start on your application so you can give each section the attention it deserves. The earlier you start, the more polished your app will be.

Get Organized Like a Pro: Google Sheets (or Excel) is your best friend here. Create a simple tracker to keep tabs on deadlines, materials, and requirements for each school. Missing a deadline could mean missing out on your dream school—so stay on top of it!

Read Every Instruction (Seriously): Every. Single. Word. Don’t just skim the prompts; make sure you understand what’s being asked. If you don’t actually answer the question, it doesn’t matter how great your essay is.

Keep it Real: Provide accurate information about your academic record, extracurricular activities, and personal background.

Showcase Your Unique Qualities: What makes you, you? Use your essay to share your story—highlight those experiences and achievements that make you stand out. Need inspiration? Check out our essay tips!

Proofread Everything:  Mistakes & typos happen. Whether you’re typing on your phone or laptop, double-check for errors. Better yet, have someone else review your app. And remember, autocorrect isn’t always your friend!

Get Specific with Examples: Don’t just list your activities—show the impact you made. Specific examples help paint a clear picture of your involvement and leadership.

Don’t Repeat Information: Your essay shouldn’t be a recap of your resume. Use each section of the Common App to tell a different part of your story. Show your depth and versatility!

Request Recommendations Early: Your teachers and counselors are busy—give them plenty of time to write a stellar recommendation. The earlier you ask, the better!

Check Application Status Regularly: After you hit submit, don’t just sit back. Regularly check your application status to make sure everything’s been received, especially those items you can’t control like transcripts and recommendations.

Follow these tips, and you’ll be on your way to a standout application. Good luck, and remember—just be yourself.
