Update on Recent Events in Library Lot
Alert Type: Information

End Time: Jan 21, 2022 @ 5:00pm
The recent occurrences in the Library Parking Lot have been extremely concerning to the safety of the PLU Community. Below is some additional information on how PLU responds to these events and what processes are already in motion.
Measures in place:
- There are 6 cameras in that parking lot (all newer, high quality) and we have been able to consistently gather footage and provide that to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department when they respond.
- We employ a Video Officer position – this means a person actively monitors the cameras around campus. This was a crucial measure in last night’s incident because our Video Officer was able to quickly identify the activity and helped initiate the call for a quick law enforcement response.
- Our Campus Safety staff provide frequent patrols in a marked vehicle and our office is located just across the street from this parking lot.
- These factors have allowed us to quickly implement our emergency security levels. Our buildings are equipped with electronic access controls, and the Campus Safety dispatcher can lock down the campus with just a few quick clicks.
- PLU employs off-duty sheriff’s deputies to patrol campus at various times. There was not one last night, but we did have one for the incident on the 14th. They patrol lots, maintain a presence, and facilitate a larger law enforcement response when situations arise.
Ongoing actions and considerations:
- A card controlled gate and/or fencing for this lot is being discussed.
- The lighting is decent in this area, but it is definitely worth continual evaluation.
- The university has reached out to local property owners and business owners for resolution to this recurrence of shootings. We have also been in contact with various Pierce County and state agencies to seek assistance with dealing with this.
