NSF REU at the University of Alabama
Interdisciplinary Application of Advanced Polymers for Engineering Innovation
This new ten-week REU Site supported by NSF will be held May 20th – July 26th, 2019. Participants will be engaged in fundamental research projects that incorporate polymer synthesis and processing, including through biological methods. Projects also focus on applications of polymers in tissue culturing, electronics, sensors, additive manufacturing and membranes. Furthermore, projects relating to polymer analysis by mass spectrometry molecular simulations are also offered. In addition to their research project, REU participants will participate in professional development and research seminars. Field trips to local industries and social activities are planned. REU students will present two oral research updates as well as a final presentation.
Each REU participant will receive a $5000 stipend, on-campus housing (at no cost) and travel reimbursement (up to $500) to/from the University of Alabama. Additionally, all REU students will be invited to present a research poster at the AIChE Annual Meeting Student Conference in Orlando, FL during November 8-11, 2019, with travel expenses covered by the program.
Students majoring in chemical engineering, bio(medical) engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, plastics & composites engineering, or any STEM field are eligible to apply. Women, underrepresented minorities and students from primarily undergraduate institutions are especially encouraged to apply. Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. Early bird application deadline – March 25, 2019. Final application deadline April 8, 2019.
