Step 3: Complete required online training (CITI)

Before submitting an HPRB application, both you and your faculty supervisor must successfully complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) online training course.

This is an ethics training to help you understand how to protect the rights and welfare of your research participants.

This training takes ~4 hours on average to complete, so allow adequate time for completion before you intend to submit.

Register (for First-Time Users): FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO AVOID ISSUES

  1. Go to the top of CITI homepage. Click on “Register.” DO NOT CHOOSE: “Log in through my institution.”
  2. On the next page, in the blank field under “Select your organization affiliation,” enter full or partial name “Pacific Lutheran University.” DO NOT CHOOSE: “Independent Learner Registration.”
  3. Then, follow the prompts to create your account.
  4. Steps 2-4 should be self-explanatory.
  5. When you get to Step 5, select NO for this question.
  6. For Step 6, identify yourself as a “Student Researcher – Undergraduate.” For Office Phone, you may use the Human Participants Review Board number: 253-535-8312.
  7. For Step 7, Question 1, select “Social/Behavioral Investigators and Key Personnel.” For Question 2, DO NOT CHECK ANY OF THE BOXES. For Questions 3 and 5, please check, “Not at this time.” For Question 4, do not select anything.
  8. During registration, when asked which course you would like to take, select ONLY “Social/Behavioral Investigators and Key Personnel.” This is the only course you are required to take.

The training guides you through different sections, each one ending with a required quiz. You need a minimum of 80% on each quiz to move on to the next section. You may take quizzes as many times as needed in order to reach at least 80% overall and be certified.

Provide Proof of CITI Completion

Your CITI Completion Report will automatically be linked with your Mentor account, as long as you are a member of the PLU community. You do not need to submit a completion report with your HPRB application. If you want a copy for your instructor or your own records (or to frame for your loved ones), select “View Completion Report” and print it.

Get Recertified (every four years)

Because Federal policy and regulations are evolving and changing with regard to the use of human participants, PLU HPRB requires that researchers be recertified every four years.
