Math Enthusiast Series: “Creative Collaborations in Mathematical Art”
“Creative Collaborations in Mathematical Art” is part of the UWT Winter Math Enthusiast Series which takes place Thursdays from 4:40-5:40pm at the UWT Campus in Joy 117 or virtually via Zoom.
In 2020, during the COVID lockdowns, Seattle-based mathematician Jessica Sklar and New Jersey-based artist Bronna Butler began a synergistic collaboration over Zoom. In this talk, they discuss their joint work as QED Arts, LLC, and talk about Mathemalchemy, a large multimedia art installation that celebrates the creativity and beauty of mathematics.
Jessica K. Sklar is a professor of mathematics at Pacific Lutheran University. She earned B.A.s in mathematics and English at Swarthmore College, and a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Oregon. Her research interests include recreational math, math in popular culture, and mathematical art. She’s passionate about cats, horror movies, and abstract algebra.
Bronna has a B.A. in Art and an M.S. in Accounting from the University of Missouri. After being a financial executive for 22 years for creative entrepreneurial design, publishing, and telecommunications firms, she founded B.A. Baroque Arts, LLC in 1997. She has completed numerous commissioned pieces, including a twenty-foot-tall stainless-steel monument, 900 square feet of stained-glass windows, and over 140 oil and pastel paintings. In 2015 she began creating glass, mirror, and metal sculptures, as well as two-dimensional artwork, with a focus on recreational mathematics, mathematicians, physicists, and science.
