PLU receives grant from Chambers-Clover Creek Watershed Council

The Chambers-Clover Creek Watershed Council awarded PLU a $1,200 to help fund the habitat restoration efforts in the Fred L. Tobiason Outdoor Learning Center.

In the past three years, more than $20,000 has been secured for the restoration project, in addition to the $1,200 from this grant. The grant from the Chambers-Clover Creek Watershed Council will be used entirely for native plants to extend the habitat restoration efforts in the Fred L. Tobiason Outdoor Learning Center further west.

Efforts to expand and enhance the native species in the Tobiason Center have been on-going. This past year, Assistant Professor of Biology Romey Haberle helped start a biology space adjacent to the Mary Baker Russell building. The plants from that space will be used as part of the Tobiason Center project, as well as to increase native plant species presence on the vacant hill space across from the Morken Center.

Last summer, the Sustainability Department was aided by a group of college bound students in clearing the space of invasive Himalayan Blackberry. It is an example of how the Tobiason Center restoration project has been a community partnership.

Efforts will culminate this year with a work-party celebration on Earth Day, April 22. Organizers from the Sustainability Department are planning the largest work-party to date for the Earth Day event. Students are asked to help make their campus beautiful and get these plants in the ground.

More about the work-party Earth Day event

The night before the work-party celebration on Earth Day, April 22, a camp-out is planned at the Habitat site on campus. Participants will be meeting at 7:30 p.m. to set up the campsite, enjoy fellowship and roast some s’mores.

Then the next morning it’s straight to work in honor of Earth Day.
