Tacoma, Wash. – Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) is pleased to announce it has been awarded over $1.9 million in Clean Buildings Performance Grant (CBPG) funding from the Washington State Department of Commerce. This significant grant will enable PLU to undertake substantial energy efficiency upgrades across eight of its largest facilities, contributing to a more sustainable campus and supporting the state’s clean energy goals.

“PLU is thrilled to receive this generous grant, which aligns perfectly with our commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible energy use,” said Greg Perkinson, Associate Vice President of Facilities Management at PLU. “These upgrades will significantly reduce our energy consumption, lower our carbon footprint, and create a more sustainable learning environment for our students and community.”

The funding, part of the Department of Commerce’s $45 million CBPG initiative, will primarily support a comprehensive lighting upgrade to energy-efficient LEDs. Additionally, PLU will utilize the grant to develop crucial compliance documentation, including an Operations and Maintenance Program, an Energy Management Plan, verification of property data in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, and all necessary CBPS compliance forms.

PLU partnered with Ameresco, a leading energy service company, to develop the grant proposal and will continue to work with them to complete the project by June 30, 2025. This collaboration ensures the project’s success and maximizes the benefits of the funding.

The Washington State Department of Commerce awarded a total of $55.5 million, including $14.5 million for energy audits, to 70 building owners across the state. This initiative aims to assist building owners in meeting the state’s Clean Buildings Performance Standard (CBPS), which targets buildings as the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Washington, accounting for 25% of statewide emissions.

“We extend our deep appreciation to the Washington State Department of Commerce for their support and vision in advancing clean energy initiatives,” added Perkinson. “We also congratulate all other grant recipients and thank Ameresco for their invaluable partnership.”

This project underscores PLU’s commitment to sustainability and building a greener future for the university and community.
