Prelicensure Clinical Performance Guidelines

The student’s first time performing ANY skill in clinical must be observed by the PLU Clinical Faculty member.*

Students can Independently Students can with RN Direct Supervision*
●     Therapeutic communication

●     Motivational interviewing

●     Initial shift assessment & charting

●     Focused assessment & charting

●     Risk Assessments (Fall, skin, etc.)

●     8hr I&O: oral/IV/Urine/BM/Drains

●     Patient teaching & Teach-back

●     Bedside Report & Handoff  to RN Partner

●     Vital Signs

●     Monitor blood administration

●     Pain assessment

●     Maintain ongoing O2 admin

●     Pulse oximetry

●     Incentive Spirometry

●     Personal Care: Bathing, hygiene, toileting & charting daily care

●     Positioning

●     Mobility, Transfers, & Ambulation

●     Assist with meals/feeding/oral care

●     Simple wound care

●     Blood glucose/glucometer

●     Standard Precautions & Hand Hygiene

●     Infectious Disease Precautions & PPE

 

 

Co-Sign is required for all charting:     

Assessments, Medications on MAR, and

documentation in patient’s chart.

●     Plan of care & develop patient goal(s)

●     Coordinate care for team of patients

●     Assist RN with other patients

●     Discharge planning & teaching

●     Medication administration of all routes

●     Medication Reconciliation

●     Place telemetry leads & interpret telemetry strips

●     Initial IV assessment & D/C

●     IV Pump setting & regulation

●     Manage IV fluids

●     Normal Saline or Heparin Flushing

●     Sterile field procedures

●     Initiate O2 administration

●     Chest drainage system management

●     Wound assessment & complex care

●     JP & Hemovac drain management

●     NG tube placement

●     Enteral Feeding

●     Oral or Tracheal Suctioning

●     Tracheostomy Care

●     Urinary catheter placement & D/C

●     Bladder scan (Can be done with CNA trained to perform bladder scans.)

●     Ostomy appliances

●     Specimen collection

●     Post Mortem Care

●     May insert IV if permitted according to institutional policy

 

Students can only observe:

●     Administering experimental drugs

●     Adminstering epidural or spinal meds

●     Administering chemotherapy

●     Setting up & managing PCA pumps

●     Drawing blood

●     Administering blood products

●     Taking verbal/telephone orders

●     Acknowledging orders in EPIC

●     Accessing/De-accessing ports

●     Assisting in OR/Cath Lab/IR, etc.
