PLU Professor announced as Keynote speaker for the 2024 Latinx Youth Summit

Dr. Maria Chávez, professor and chair of PLU’s political science department, will be delivering the keynote address for the 22nd annual Latinx Youth Summit on Friday, November 22.

Dr. Chávez is a distinguished author, teacher and speaker with years of research experience. Dr. Chávez specializes in American government, public policy, Latino politics, and race and politics. Her work centers on the political, civic, and professional experiences of Latinos in American society and her research has earned an American Political Science Association Best Book Award in Latino Politics twice. Dr. Chávez has also been selected for the Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau Program twice, including for the current 2024-2025 period for her talk, “The Firsts: Latina Struggles in the U.S.”

The 2024 Latinx Youth Summit will be held on Friday, November 22, at Grays Harbor College under the theme, “Caminando Juntos, Caminamos Lejos / Walking Together, We Walk Far.” This annual event brings together Latinx high school students from across Washington to engage in educational programming designed to inspire students to achieve their college and career goals. In addition to Dr. Chávez’ keynote address, participants will attend workshops, gather resources, dance and celebrate their shared community.
