University Statement Guidelines and Practices

At PLU, our Lutheran heritage motivates a bold commitment to expanding well-being, opportunity, and justice. Rooted in a community-wide commitment to care, we’re driven to confront established norms and forge new connections in teaching and learning. We constantly challenge ourselves and the world we love to be better for our neighbors — both down the street and around the world.

PLU is a community of deep-thinking individuals who embrace complexity and ask tough, intelligent questions. Our campus is not an ideological monolith. Shared values unite and connect us, but our commitment to rigorous academic inquiry encourages diverse thoughts and perspectives.

In response to challenging or divisive events, our primary focus is always on the health and well-being of our entire campus community. Additionally, we endeavor to provide learning and dialogue opportunities responsive to particular issues or events of the moment.

The university regularly receives requests to make public statements on various topics, from local to global issues; from spiritual matters to political unrest and natural disasters. While there may be rare or exceptional circumstances in which the university will share a statement on an issue, event, or policy, we prioritize actions in providing mental health support services and educational programming to better aid our community.
