Residence Hall Improvement Projects
We are excited to share a change in process at PLU that will allow additional investment in our residence halls. Beginning with the summer of 2025, Campus Life will receive a portion of the housing revenue to reinvest into our residence halls on campus. We could not be more excited to plan projects and continue to care for the places PLU students call home! Of course, caring for the halls has always been a PLU priority, but this change in process allows Campus Life to not only continue scheduled maintenance but to also identify needed projects and refreshes year to year and focus this revenue to address these needs.
Campus Life works with our partners in Facilities to complete projects whenever possible. Sometimes this means during the academic year when students are in residence or over the course of winter break. Whenever possible, we look for opportunities to refresh and care for our halls. A few projects completed during the 2024-25 academic year.
- A kitchen refresh was completed in Kreidler 2nd and 3rd floor kitchens which included new paint on the walls and cabinets.
- A kitchen refresh was completed in the Hinderlie 1st floor kitchen which included new paint on the walls, some minor repairs, new paint on the cabinets and new cabinet hardware. Whenever possible Campus Life likes to repurpose items and the cabinet hardware was a great example of using existing inventory to upgrade another space!
- Deep cleaning the carpets in Pflueger 1st and 2nd floor lounges
- Tile cleaned and waxed in Pflueger 1st floor lounge
- Waxed all resident rooms in both Stuen and Kreidler
Campus Life is actively in the planning stage for multiple projects for 2025-2026. This process includes requesting multiple bids, working collaboratively with campus partners on resources and access, and budget planning. Depending on resources, some or all of these projects are planned to begin in June of 2025. This planning process is multi-year, so projects may roll to subsequent years or be completed in phases.
- Waxing floors in resident rooms in Hinderlie Hall
- New lounge furniture to be placed in the Tingelstad lobby and lounges on floors 2, 4, 6, and 8
- New lounge furniture to be placed in Pflueger 1st and 2nd floor lounges as well as the lobby
- Reupholstery project in South Hall: This project would complete up to 30 apartments by sending out our current furniture to have it fully repaired and reupholstered. This keeps old furniture out of landfills and allows us to refresh more pieces by saving $$ on each piece of furniture compared to a new purchase.
- Carpet projects: Campus Life is currently looking to replace carpet in high traffic areas where possible.
- Possible replacement in the Harstad lobby and east and west entrance areas is currently under review.
- Possible replacement of carpet in South Hall apartments based on vacancy, timing and cost. This would include painting apartments in conjunction with the carpet replacement.
- Ongoing room/apartment painting as vacancies allow
PLU is committed to sustainable materials and uses fully recyclable materials in their residence hall carpeting projects.
