Grace Elinor Foege Holmes passed away on Feb. 8, 2023 in Lenexa, Kansas, at age 90. She was born on March 27, 1932 in Crookston, Minnesota. She earned her bachelor’s degree from PLU in 1953, and also graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle. She married classmate, Frederick Holmes, in 1955. In 1957, they graduated with MD degrees. Together, they were called to medical mission work in Malaysia and Tanzania. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, Grace served on the Pediatric and Preventive Medicine faculties, until her retirement as professor emerita in 2000. Grace published 55 papers in scholarly journals, developed the Kansas Infant Development Screen chart, and authored several books. She never slowed down, even in retirement.
Grace is survived by Frederick Holmes, as well as her children: Heidi (Arthur Morgan), Lisa (Imants Sics), Theodore (Connie), Julia (John McMorrough), and Andrew (Claudia). She was blessed with 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She’s also survived by her siblings Mildred Toepel ’52, William Foege ’57, Annette Stixrud ’61, and Carolyn Hellberg.
