Elsie Carothers ’83 died April 19, 2014.

Carothers died April 19, 2014. She was born on Aug. 26, 1937, in Jersey City, N.J., to John and Katharina (Kuzmiak) Galik. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents and by her siblings, Mary Chando, Billy Galik and John Galik. She is survived by her husband, David Carothers; sister, Kay Mastey; children, Susan Elaine Carothers and Katherine Elizabeth Carothers, and son-in-law, Drew Marvin; grandson, Nico Marvin; niece, Mary Ann Taylor; and nephews, Carl Mark Chando, Johnny Chando, Michael David Mastey, Robert Mastey, Glen Mastey, Billy Galik, Bobby Galik and Jefferey Galik. Elsie married 1st Lt. David Carothers, U.S. Army, in 1966 in Frankfurt, Germany, at the 97th General Hospital Chapel. She attended Lincoln High School in Jersey City, N.J., graduated from East Orange School of Nursing in 1958 and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Pacific Lutheran University. She has earned awards as a volunteer in the Girl Scouts, Red Cross and Army Community Service. Elsie was a devoted mother and Army Wife for 30 years and moved 29 times during this service. Elsie lived in many places as they traveled: Jersey City, N.J.; Yakima, Wash; San Francisco, Calif.; Frankfurt, Germany; Fort Rucker, Ala.; Fort Knox, Ky.; South Bridge, N.J.; South River, N.J.; Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Tabb, Va.; Carlisle, Pa.; College Station, TX; Alexandria, Va.; Fort Lewis, Wash.; Edmond, Okla. and San Antonio, TX. She also worked for the Letterman Army Hospital San Francisco; 97th General Hospital Frankfurt, Germany; East Burnswick General Hospital; Washington Nursing Home, in Tacoma, Wash.; Cumberline County Nursing Home in Carlisle, Pa.; and nursing homes in Virginia and Oklahoma. Elsie enjoyed caring for the elderly, volunteered with the Girl Scouts, was a Devout Catholic and raised two wonderful daughters.
