He initially enlisted as an Infantry Paratrooper in 2003. MAJ Atkins attended the Interservice Physician Assistant Program and has served as a Physician Assistant since 2010.

He holds an MFA from the University of New Orleans and a PhD from Western Michigan University, where he was editor of Third Coast. He was born and raised in Minneapolis, where he continues to live with his wife and three kids. He is at work on his third novel.
