I think language and culture teach us about ourselves, but also teach us empathy for others. For me, the study and teaching of languages and literatures was a way to gain a closer understanding, a closer bond, to my own heritage. The ability to study my own culture in a critical academic way grounds me in my own heritage. I view it as a great privilege to share my heritage
