February 26, 2012 Alum introduces a little titration magic, of sorts, into the PLU chemistry labs With a click of a mouse, magic – chemically speaking – seemed to happen in a lecture room at the Morken Center recently. Students and professors gathered around a new spectrophotometer developed by MicroLab Inc. Results of labs that used to take hours were available in minutes, if not seconds, using the new instrument, six of which (valued at a total of $10,000) were donated to PLU’s chemistry

electrical & computer engineering. Students can choose to work on the theory that drives the development of new molecules for trapping solar energy, new electrode materials and chemistry for batteries, or models for grid management of renewable energy. Other labs work on integrating these new materials into devices at both the nano- and macro-scale. By the end of the summer, students are familiar with both the technical skills of performing research within the lab, and the social and cultural skills

assigned laboratories as well as associated stockrooms and prep spaces. The Lab Managers report to the Chemistry Department Chair and operate with limited supervision. Responsibilities include the coordination, planning, development, and implementation of inventory, purchasing, safety, and technical operations of laboratory spaces. While much of their lab work is independent, Lab Managers are expected to collaborate with each other to increase efficiency, share burdensome tasks, and support each other
