In 1983 she won an apprenticeship with the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists and was an active participant in the Chicago opera community. She was a member of both the Chicago Lyric Opera Chorus and the Chicago Symphony Chorus under the direction of Margaret Hillis, and a recipient of the Margaret Hillis Fellowship.
