The life and work of Bjug Harstad (1848-1933)The Rev. Bjug Harstad, Pacific Lutheran University’s founder, was born on a small farm in Valle, Norway, on Dec. 17, 1848. The youngest son of 10 brothers and sisters, Bjug began working to support the family at a young age by herding cattle for neighboring farms — the beginnings of a lifelong work ethic.
