About Raphael LemkinThis lecture is named in honor of Raphael Lemkin, a Polish-born Jew who escaped from Nazi-controlled Poland during the war. After many perilous adventures across Europe at war, Lemkin made it to the United States. He obtained a position teaching international law at Duke University. Socialist Germany, the company had to be given up in 1934. Sometime around 1937/1938 the family moved to Wiesbaden for security reasons. There Emmy managed to complete training as a cosmetician. In 1939 came their “emigration” to the US. Up to that point her young son Kurt had attended no fewer than three Jewish schools. In the US Emmy Mayer had considerable success with a cosmetics company under the name “Emmy Bouquet” [playing on her maiden name of Strauss]. Her son was able to continue his mother’s
