November 12, 2012 Gustav Klimt painted this portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer in 1907 at the behest of her husband, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. The painting was confiscated by the Nazis in 1938, and was displayed in the Austrian National Gallery until Ferdinand’s niece, Maria Altmann decided in 1998 to claim the painting, and other Klimt masterpieces, for the family and battled up to the Supreme Court to have the paintings returned.
