Affordable Housing Projects
Taken from Pierce County's Website
Human Services uses local and federal funding to finance the development and preservation of affordable rental housing and the development of homeownership opportunities for low income households in Pierce County. Below are some highlights from projects we’ve helped develop over the last several years.
The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs lased 5+ acres in Orting to create a tiny home village for veterans experiencing homelessness. The project broken ground in January 2020 and are expected to have their first guests move in this Spring. The village can house up to 35 chronically homeless veterans in Pierce County.
The YWCA Pierce County recently opened Dorothy Height Apartments in Tacoma, a few blocks from Wright Park. The development welcomed it’s first family in February 2021 and features 54 units of low-cost housing. 75% of the units are reserved for individuals and families exiting homelessness, with the remaining units allocated to low-income families, people with disabilities, or others with barriers to permanent housing.
In partnership with the City of Lakewood, Homeownership Center Northwest recently celebrated the groundbreaking of their new development in Lakewood. This development will offer affordable homes to low and moderate-income households.
The Youth Host Home Program pairs a young person experiencing homelessness with a caring household wanting to make a difference.
While Host Homes Providers provide a living space and light mentorship, the Youth Host Home Program Case Manager assists participants to overcome barriers preventing them from achieving educational, employment, and personal goals, and with developing skill sets for attaining the self-sufficiency needed to live independently.
Host Home Providers are people with an extra bedroom in their house or apartment who are willing to open their home to a young person experiencing homelessness. Please explore this web page to learn more about what Associated Ministries’ Youth Home Program is, how programs like this are changing lives all over the country, and how you can make a difference right here in Pierce County.
