from Chehalis, Wash. Why PLU? PLU was just the perfect fit for me. In looking for schools for my undergraduate degree, I knew I wanted somewhere with small class sizes, significant student-faculty interaction, and the opportunity to participate in research. One example that I particularly remember was a lunch I attended my senior year in high school. By chance I was sitting with Dr. Matt Smith and was able to speak with him about research, the biology department, and my own interests. Another piece

thing to think about is the fact that even the students paying the full sticker price at the most expensive college in America (currently that’s Sarah Lawrence College, at $67,000 per year) are still receiving some subsidy from society—tax breaks, tax exemptions, gifts, endowment proceeds, federal and state grants for research, construction, and equipment, etc. So, as “commodities” go, a college education is one of the most complex “products” there is. That’s probably enough for now. Please comment

sending out emails for the care forms — I would talk to students about being homesick, their general mental health, or other things. No matter how small or how big the care form was, it always felt really good to send out that email and get a response saying that I helped a student. My favorite thing was being able to connect with students and help them. How did you find working with other students and your peers in a professional environment? I first started giving advice to my friends, which is a

My best friend and I met in our residence hall at Pacific Lutheran University. The band he and I started performed for the first time in its lobby. I can remember with equal fondness all-nighters spent cramming for finals and all-nighters playing video games. Earlier…
alma mater has decided that Foss Hall will not be a part of the university’s future, but that does not mean that I am unaffected. Someday I will give my daughter a tour of PLU’s handsome woodland campus, enthusiastically recounting to her my days as a Lute and not-so-subtly lobbying her to follow in my collegiate footsteps. As I name residence hall after residence hall on our tour, my daughter will no doubt ask me which one I lived in when I was a student. That will be a sobering moment. But that
