While equality was required at such parties, it was imperfect and often insubstantial, and true equality among those in attendance was impossible due to outside pressures, economic status, gender, and power imbalances caused by all of these factors and more. Despite this impossibility, imperfect equality was better than none at all, and the symposium effectively allowed for this flawed but equal space to exist.
